I believe it’s important to never stop learning, to never think you know it all. To grow you must have an open mind and be willing to make changes in your life. So many times I say, ah if only I knew back then, what I know now. But that’s the great thing about life, you learn and grow and change.
In my previous job which I had for 16 years, there were set rules around exactly what to do, how to do it, and why. There was always someone to ask for help, advice and to show me the way. Then once I knew my way around, I was there to help others learn, and I knew my role inside out. I was comfortable and part of a team.
Then I made the change to photography, and there were no rules, there was no team and I was not comfortable! There was no one to answer my questions, no rules or correct way to do it because there are so many different ways to do the same thing in photography, it all comes down to personal taste. So I had to practice, and practice, and find out what I like, and how to make that appear in a photograph. I had to learn light, shade, camera angles, posing, composition, colours, aperture, the list goes on!
From the beginning I loved Adelaide photographer Katherine Schultz’s style. Her timeless, simplistic, classic newborn photos are all about love and connection. So when she came to Melbourne last month to teach all things business and newborn photography I booked a ticket straight away. I spent a full day learning from Katherine, and she was so generous with the knowledge she has worked so hard to gain. She was completely open and honest about her business and how it runs. I walked away feeling grateful, inspired, educated and confident.
Gorgeous Penelope was one of the cute newborn models we photographed with Katherine, and she was just perfect.
